🌍 About the Cross Border License (CBL)
This software is built on the belief that technology should protect the vulnerable, not provide tools for their surveillance or prosecution.
While this project is built on the foundation of the MIT License, we have added the Cross Border License (CBL) to ensure that the “freedom” of this software does not come at the cost of human rights.
🛡️ For Refugees and Displaced Persons
This software is a safe space. You are encouraged to use this tool to document your journey, report violence, and make your claims for asylum. Your data is your own, and this license is designed to prevent it from being weaponised against you.
🚤 For Governmental Authorities
Access is conditional. We recognize that governments often manage the infrastructure for search-and-rescue. Therefore:
- YES: You may use this software if you are a designated rescue team saving lives at sea or on land.
- NO: This software may not be used by police, military, or coast guards for border enforcement, interceptions, or criminalizing movement.
- NO TRACKING: You are legally prohibited from using this software to track refugees or using their claims as evidence for prosecution or deportation.
⚖️ For Human Rights Advocates
Data for Accountability. Human rights organizations are granted explicit permission to use data generated here to hold state actors accountable. If a government violates international law, this software is intended to help you prove it.
⚠️ A Note on Compliance
By using this software, you agree to these ethical boundaries. If a government or entity uses this tool for surveillance or unauthorised policing, their license to use the software is automatically revoked. Using this software for harm is not just a violation of our values; it is a breach of the legal contract of this license.
